“Did You Get a Haircut?”

People ask me pretty regularly if I have gotten a haircut. Or at least they did, back in the Beforetimes, when I used to see people. The answer is almost always no. And yet people always think I have.

The thing about curly hair is that it shrinks a lot when it dries, and it dries differently pretty much every time I wash it. And so, sometimes it seems to look significantly shorter to people. Which leads to them constantly asking me if I’ve gotten a haircut.

This does lead to some amusing situations. Probably more than once, someone has asked me if I’ve gotten a haircut, and I’ve automatically said no, only to realize that, yes, I actually had gotten a haircut! Or times when I have obviously gotten a haircut – like, my hair is 6 inches shorter than it was – and people still look at me like they’re not really sure.

And it’s especially funny when curlies end up playing the “did you get a haircut” game with other curlies:

Panel 1: Two curly-haired women sit on a park bench. The woman on the right asks the one on the left, "Did you get a haircut?" The woman on the left answers, "no."
Panel 2: Two curly-haired women sit on a park bench. The one on the left looks at the one on the right with a contemplative expression on her face.
Panel 3: Two curly-haired women sit on a park bench. The one on the left asks, "Did YOU get a haircut?" and the one on the right answers, "no."
Panel 4: Two curly-haired women sit on a park bench, laughing.
